WEEK 1: Our days started with
Kiswahili for a few hours in the morning. Followed by lesson from our medical
team on how to stay healthy and some shots. Then lunch, followed by some other
training lectures.
First week with my host family was amazing. My
host family has four sons from age of 23 – 29. Two live in Nairobi and two of
the sons live in Machakos. I got to know them very well and they speak perfect
English that made the transition much easier. Getting used to the different
ways of bathing and using the restroom. The weather is perfect because its
wintertime here and temperature is very cool.
WEEK 2: Training schedule
remained the same for the most part. They separated the Public Health Educators
from the business group.
I got very comfortable with my host family. Went
to church with them, which was in English. Got to meet some of the community
members. Watcher African football (soccer) match and met more People.
WEEK 3:
Same Kiswahili lesson in the morning. We had a
current Kenya Peace Corps volunteer come and give a presentation on Malaria. It
was very informative and very interesting to hear her experience so far. She
has been serving for 2 years and she will be heading home in a few weeks. She
answered all of our crazy questions. We also meet two more current
volunteers.
